The town of Wareham's sanitary sewer system is exposed directly to seaside communities, beaches, sensitive bays, salt marshes, along the Massachusetts coastline. Like much of the country, Wareham relies on an aging sanitary sewer system comprised of clay, ductile iron, and RCP pipelines. The town was faced with the challenge of rehabilitating its sewer system that runs parallel to and through sensitive ocean environments.

The Wareham Sewer Department Board was determined to execute the rehabilitation without disrupting the surrounding seaside communities or damaging the area's delicate ecology. With assistance from the BETA Group, the Board opted for a CIPP repair method using only specified products that were laboratory proven to be safe for fragile aquatic life. The A&W team was able to supply both a styrene-free epoxy resin system with structural glass and felt liners manufactured by Warren Environmental. Their product passed third-party ASTM testing proving it would not harm aquatic life exposed to it.

The specific scope included CIPP lining 2,700 LF of 18-inch and 5,900 LF of 21-inch RCP sanitary gravity sewer pipelines using Warren's 501-SL aquatic safe epoxy resin. The scope also included the epoxy coating of 40 brick sewer manholes. The A&W crew and subcontractor SAK overcame tremendous challenges managing infiltration during installation using 3.2 MGD of bypass pumping. With the constant support and collaboration of the local authorities, Conservation Department, and the Sewer Department, we completed the project with no environmental impact on the area and minimal disruption to the community.
